Why does a state university need private support?

New Mexico State University is state-assisted rather than state-supported. State support is critically important, but it does not represent a significant portion of the University’s total operating budget making private contributions from alumni and friends increasingly important in order for NMSU to fulfill its mission of excellence in education, research, and service.

Who manages the Foundation?

The NMSU Foundation is governed by a Board of Directors that elects its officers including a chair, vice-chair, secretary, and treasurer. The Vice President for Advancement also serves as President of the Foundation. The Board has approximately 45 members, including the NMSU President, who serves as an ex-officio member.

How does the Foundation report on its business practices?    

As a separately incorporated foundation, the NMSU Foundation exists under New Mexico corporate law and meets the law's requirements, including making a significant amount of information available to the public, such as the IRS Forms 990 and 990-T and Sports Enterprises 990 (annual tax return report with substantial information on revenues and expenses), audited financial statements, and the Honor Roll Booklet which provides calendar year fundraising performance by donor.
