Frequently Asked Questions
Who are the "Crimson Colleagues?"
"Crimson Colleagues" is the new name for the program that encourages charitable giving to NMSU by its faculty and staff.
What is Faculty and Staff giving?
Faculty and Staff giving is a campus-wide collaboration that provides current and retired faculty and staff an opportunity to directly impact NMSU and its students through their collective generosity.
Why should I donate?
As an employee of NMSU, you have the unique opportunity to give back directly to the place where you work and support thr programs you love on campus. NMSU relies increasingly on private support. We ask for contributions from alumni, friends, parents, students, faculty, staff, corporations, and foundations to keep an NMSU education affordable and to expand our research and teaching agenda.
What is the value of Faculty and Staff giving?
Together, your gifts help provide merit and need-based financial aid for deserving students as well as faculty development, teaching and research programs. Your gift sets an example for our alumni and students. In fact, many foundations and corporations evaluate faculty and staff giving as one component when they consider grant requests.
How much should I give?
Any amount that feels comfortable for you. Philanthropy is a personal choice that each person should make based on their own priorities and objectives.
May I designate my gift to any area of campus?
Yes. All gifts to NMSU are important and help improve the educational experience. The areas of undergraduate scholarships has been identified as a priority, but you may designate your gift to any school, department, or program of your choosing.
How does payroll deduction work?
Payroll deduction is one of the most convenient ways to make your gift. By completing a payroll deduction form, you can choose the amount to have automatically deducted from each paycheck. As Crimson Colleagues Advisory Council Member, Suzanne Mones, explains:
"I don't notice the difference in my take-home pay and it really makes
me feel good to know I am giving back."
Are payroll deduction contributions deducted on a pre-tax basis?
No. Payroll deduction gifts and pledges are deducted on an after-tax basis according to federal law. You can claim the tax deduction when you file your taxes annually.
What if my spouse/partner works for a matching gift company?
If your spouse/partner works for a matching gift company, your gift may be doubled or even tripled. Please contact the Office of University Advancement for your partner's company's matching gift form. Then, just complete the form and enclose it when returning your contribution to NMSU.
How can I give?
Many faculty and staff donors choose to give to the program of their choice by payroll deduction using the simple online form, mypayrollgift.nmsu.edu by logging in using your my.nmsu.edu credentials. You can also make a secure online gift.
If you make a gift with a personal check, please write your choice of program or unit to support on the memo line and make the check payable to "NMSU Foundation."
